Hat Addicted Lover

Friday, January 13, 2012

I'm deeply in love with all kinds of hats. Especially the ones called Hat Net ('French netting' or 'Russian veiling').
One of the first hats to be depicted was found in a tomb painting at Thebes and shows a man wearing a coolie-style straw hat. Other early hats include the Pileus, which was a simple skull cap, the Phrygian cap, which became identified later as the 'liberty cap' given to slaves in Greece and Rome when they were made free men, and the Pestasos which comes from ancient Greece and is the first known hat with a brim.

Although women from an early stage were always expected to have their heads covered by veils, kerchiefs, hoods, caps and wimples, it was not until the end of the 16th century that women's structured hats, based on those of male courtiers began to be seen.
It was in the late seventeenth century that women's headgear began to emerge in its own right and not be influenced by men's hat fashions. The word 'milliner', A maker of women's hats, was first recorded in 1529 when the term referred to the products for which Milan and the northern Italian regions were well known, i.e. ribbons, gloves and straws. The haberdashers who imported these highly popular straws were called 'Millaners' from which the word was eventually derived.

By the mid 1800's Swiss and Italian straws, together with imitation straws made from paper, cardboard, grass and horsehair were available to women, along with the introduction of velvet and tulle.
During the first half of the nineteenth century the bonnet dominated women's fashion, becoming very large with many ribbons, flowers, feathers and gauze trims giving an appearance of even greater size. By the end of the century, although bonnets were still prevalent, many other styles were to be found, including wide brims with flat crowns, the flower pot and the toque - feathers and veils abounded.

Although early in the 1900's most hats were enormous and adorned with flowers, feathers, ribbons and tulle, by the mid 1920's women's hair had become much shorter with the shingle cut and the cloche, which hugged the head like a helmet with a very small brim, had come into fashion. Now, after World War 1, there was suddenly such a proliferation of styles and materials that many women had to rely on the advice of milliners.

During the 1930's and 40's the tendency was for hats to have higher crowns with smaller brims and once it was War-Time again, it was mainly the trims which were changed with women making do with turbans made from pre-war materials.
Since their invention, hats have come and gone as status symbols, uniforms and fashion statements as well as being functional sports and protective headgear.

Me with only some of the hats

There are a lot of types of hats(but I will just focus on the favourite ones and write a short description about them)
FEDORA hats-Although those are the hats that mostly represent the male population, I love wearing them! Nowadays, they became so popular among haute couture's shows. The Fedora Hat comes by its name from the heroine (as well as the play’s title) of Victorian Sardou's drama presented in Paris in 1882. Of course the fedora hat style is iconic as the men’s hat style in the Western world for the first half of the 20th Century.
Here are some of the pictures of my beloved Fedora hats

I just love those vibrant colors, and this picture with green fur and dark red lipstick is perfect!
I've just realized, if I go on like this, I will make a 10000 picture post(that happens when you love something so much and feel that you could write about it for hours)
I will do a post of my hats in some of the future posts:D I've bought a lot of new ones:P
So, another type of hats which I adore are Hat net

Here are some of the pictures of my top hat with net, which I found. They are probably taken during the last summer.
p.s.- The top hat is from Lindex and the net is from H&M(I took this net and put it on the hat, and whenever I feel the need to, I apply this net on different hats. I've also got the same one in beige color)

Inspiration from runaways and editorials

Now a little bit about the third favourite group BOWLER hats(I've got the most of them)
The first hat of the industrial age, the bowler was designed in 1850 by the Bowler family of Southwark specifically for a customer of England's pre-eminent hatmaker, Lock's of St. James's. William Coke needed a practical, simple, rigid, durable hat to protect his gamekeeper's head; a hat that would stand up to the most demanding of conditions, including riding in pursuit of poachers. Coke tested the hat's prototype by standing on its crown in Lock's showroom. Twice. It passed the test.

And the fourth favourite one -TOP HATS
Beginning with the French Consulate And Empire period in Western history (1800-1815) and escalating into the Romantic Period (1815-1840), high beaver top hats supplanted the cocked hat or the bi/tricorn as the mode in men’s fashion. When, by 1890, the St. James Gazette writes “When we are told, ‘He’s a fellow who wears a top hat and a frock coat,’ we know sufficiently well what sort of fellow he is”, the top hat’s connotations are well established.

I'm dying to have this one!!!

That's my top 4 list of hats!FEDORA, BOWLER, TOP AND NET HATS:)
But I love other types as well!
And just to finish off with my drawing of a girl with bowler kind of hat:D
Stay tuned for the upcoming posts!I've got a lot of new things to show you, my lovely readers!
Stay healthy and happy!
Kisses
Angelica
